Understand the existing home
Renovations and extensions start with what is already there: structure, services, roofline, access, waterproofing, drainage and how the family will use the home while work is happening.
Plan the join between old and new
The best additions do not feel patched on. Ask how framing, floor levels, openings, exterior finishes, light, privacy and indoor-outdoor movement will connect to the existing home.
Talk about disruption early
Ask which rooms are affected, whether living at home is practical, how trades will access the site, and which decisions need to be made before work starts.
